Welcome!
Chicago's Near South is a community reborn. Looking today at the area
just south of the Loop, from Lake Michigan west to the Chicago River,
you'll find a vibrant place where you can live, work, play, study, pray,
and shop.
A PLACE TO PLAY
Sample our diverse neighborhoods. Visit the restaurants, shops, museums,
galleries and
historic sites of spots like Printers Row, Chinatown, the Prairie Avenue
Historic District, Bronzeville, Motor Row, River City and Central
Station for just a start. Check out events at McCormick Place, the
nation's largest convention center. Or peruse the White Sox schedule for a
home game at U.S. Cellular Field. A PLACE TO LIVE AND WORK
From young singles to empty-nesters, people are finding homes in new
high-rise towers, in rehabilitated coach houses, in lofts converted from
old warehouses, or in communities of new townhouses.
Supporting this residential growth, the Near South is home to thriving
businesses. Retail, banking, printing, health care, fitness, auto
care--you name it. It's also a center for education. Over 24 colleges,
universities, and other institutions of higher learning call the Near
South home. And churches, hospitals, schools...the essentials that link
you to the community are all here.
THE NEAR SOUTH PLANNING BOARD. . .
serves this community. We're a not-for-profit organization tending the
needs of businesses, property owners, developers and institutions for close to
60 years.
